47 Meters Down has sharks, and sometimes that’s good enough: EW review

But that’s neither here nor there. Not especially. But B-movies wouldn’t exist without dumb people making dumb decisions. This will not be one of those movies that has clever twists or subtle character motivations or wild double-crosses or surprises of any kind. Lisa wants to be more like her—mainly because, in a retro plot point that could only be devised by male screenwriters, she thinks it might win back her ex, who sounds like a jackass. After meeting a couple of cute local guys during a night of partying, the foursome makes a date for the following day to go cage diving in waters infested with Great White sharks. As Modine and his first mate ladle out scoops of bloody fish guts to attract a feeding frenzy of 25-footers, Lisa and Kate chastely shimmy into wet suits, don scuba gear, and lower themselves into a rusty cage to go eye to eye with nature’s killing machines. But as far as cheap warm-weather junk food goes, it will suffice. This is, of course, a terrible idea. And then some. It will have to. But, naturally, the winch snaps and down they go – 47 meters down to be precise – to the bottom of the ocean. As moviegoers, our demands are simple and few. If sharks are involved, all the better. But, by God, it worked. What follows won’t make anyone forget about Jaws (or Deep Blue Sea, or Open Water, or The Shallows for that matter). He’s also got a shark’s grin of his own. Which gives you some idea of all of the potentially tantalizing ideas that were left on the table by director Johannes Roberts and his co-writer Ernest Riera. Running low on air and scared out of their wits, the sisters make one boneheaded move after another (seriously, banging on the cage’s bars?!). So, before you can say “You’re gonna need a bigger boat”, the double-daters are climbing aboard a rust-bucket boat captained by Matthew Modine, speaking Spanish and sporting salty stubble and a bandana like Robert Shaw’s Quint crossed with Louden Swain from Vision Quest. Mandy Moore, the quote-unquote star here, plays Lisa—an overly cautious young woman on a relaxing vacation in Mexico with her younger sister, Kate (Pretty Little Liars’ Claire Holt). And in the summertime, we demand just two things: Big-budget blockbusters as far as the eye can see and one or two disposable guilty-pleasure B-movies. Only you don’t say it to yourself because it’s so damn obvious. Last year around this time, a bikini-clad Blake Lively rang the dinner bell in the giddily preposterous, The Shallows. B–

It’s just a lean and mean (and mostly un-gorey) shark thriller clocking in at an efficient and slightly threadbare 89 minutes. She has no problem chatting up strangers at a bar and making out with them. But despite the barebones premise, Roberts manages to cough up just enough tense, nail-biting moments while the clock is ticking – even if he cheaps out a bit on the shark stuff. And if it doesn’t quite jolt all of the shlock pleasure centers of The Shallows, it more or less gets the job done (especially if you’re handing out bonus points for a title that traffics in the metric system). Now, like lifeless-eyed predators following the scent of chum, we arrive at 47 Meters Down. Was it a good movie? ‘He’s a bad guy,” you say to yourself. But here’s the thing: he’s not a villain.

“I messed up,” the actress and filmmaker said in a statement posted to her social media accounts. Shari Belafonte was among those in attendance and attempted to point out that Spielberg directed The Color Purple — which starred Whoopi Goldberg and stands as a cultural touchstone, particularly for black women — but the correction didn’t register with Banks. Elizabeth Banks apologized Thursday for incorrectly asserting that Steven Spielberg has never made a movie with a female lead, and for appearing to dismiss the significance of his 1985 adaptation of The Color Purple. “When referring to Steven Spielberg at the Women in Film awards, I framed my comments about his films inaccurately. “I made things worse by giving the impression that I was dismissing Shari Belafonte when she attempted to correct me. (Spielberg’s Sugarland Express and The BFG also featured female leads.)
“When I made the comments, I was thinking of recent films Steven directed, it was not my intention to dismiss the [importance] of the iconic #TheColorPurple,” Banks said in her mea culpa. I spoke with Shari backstage and she was kind enough to forgive me.”
She concluded, “Those who have the privilege and honor of directing and producing films should be held to account for our mistakes, whether it’s about diversity or inaccurate statements. I’m very sorry.”

Aisha Tyler chokes back tears announcing her exit from CBS’ The Talk

I could not have done with this without you. Aisha Tyler is leaving   The Talk   after six years. She also cited the success of   Wonder Woman   and the likes of Ava DuVernay for making her realize “this is a really important time for female directors.”

Whether you consider her work crude or delightfully regressive thanks to its juvenile, escapist flair, Lewis’ success story is an inherently fascinating chronicle of unexpected talent sparking accidental genius. Show Full Article Much like Maud’s paintings, Maudie succeeds in stimulating our curiosity about the artist herself, and the mysteries of her success in the real world inevitably become more interesting and powerful than the unfussy sincerity of the film. Despite fiercely committed performances, Maudie‘s dedication to authenticity makes the film feel like a rigid antique, and it consequently plays like a pop-up version of a thoroughly written Wikipedia entry, albeit a charming one. A modest biographical drama in quaint 1930s period dressings, Maudie   stars Sally Hawkins as Maud Lewis, Canada’s premier folk artist whose simplistic portraits of unassuming subjects like cats, dogs, and flowers garnered the arthritic painter both high praise and criminally low-ball offers from public patrons before her untimely death in 1970. Hawkins pumps a childlike sense of innocence and peculiarity into the part, as Maud’s unorthodox coupling with Everett evolves from its tumultuous tyrant-versus-slave dynamic into a beautiful, layered romance. Most of that charm resides in the effortless grace with which Hawkins – giving one of the best performances of the year – takes to the character, playing every physical tic and emotional key with quiet intensity. In the restrained hands of director Aisling Wash (The Daisy Chain), Maudie meanders through the midway point in the downtrodden icon’s life, picking up as she discovers her independence after living with a no-nonsense aunt for most of her adulthood. Like one of the many flowers Maud painted in the single-room, seaside shack she and Everett shared, Maudie is breezy and digestible. Through her eyes, we see the same zest for life blossom around Maud, who once viewed her existence as a meaningless, gray slate that later teems with the varied hues of a swooning heart set ablaze.

Box office preview: Cars 3 to zoom past Wonder Woman

Also opening at around 575 locations this weekend is Focus’ Colin Trevorrow-directed drama The Book of Henry, which stars Naomi Watts as the mother of two young boys (Jaeden Lieberher, Jacob Tremblay) who seek to save their friend (Maddie Ziegler) from the abusive clutches of her stepfather (Dean Norris). Look for Eyez to bag anything from $15 million to $22 million over the three-day stretch. Outside the top five, the Mandy Moore/Claire Holt shark thriller 47 Meters Down should drum up solid business from the teenage crowd. Wonder Woman   is still performing well above expectations (midweek numbers are holding strong between $6 million and $9 million after a slight 43 percent drop from week one to week two),   but Cars 3   should still lay on the gas enough for a No. Superhero tentpoles tend to drop big across their sophomore outing (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice lost 69 percent of its first weekend audience, while Suicide Squad similarly saw 67 percent of moviegoers jumping ship in its second week) and level off for round three. 4 – Rough Night – $21 million
There couldn’t be a more fitting time for a female-fronted (and directed, mind you, as Broad City‘s Lucia Aniello takes the reins here), R-rated comedy to debut on domestic screens. While the film has received largely negative reviews, its buzzy premise, sensational theatrical trailer, and appealing cast (Sarah Silverman, Lee Pace, and Bobby Moynihan also star) should be enough for casual audiences to hitch a ride. Still, now 11 years after the first film sped to $244 million total in the U.S. With each of its iterations bowing in the summer, Cars is basically Pixar’s answer to the traditional seasonal spectacle, often landing a little lighter on the quality side, but consistently delivering easily digestible, harmless family-friendly entertainment. 3 – All Eyez On Me – $22 million
Though he died in 1996, Tupac Shakur remains one of the music industry’s most influential and respected figures, having sold over 75 million records worldwide. 1 – Cars 3 – $58 million
Let’s face it:   Cars, while far from being on its last legs as a franchise, doesn’t carry the same box office girth as its Disney/Pixar brethren, and it lacks the glowing critical reviews of fellow Pixar releases like Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Inside Out. Now, the long-gestating movie chronicling his life — directed by Benny Boom and starring Demetrius Shipp Jr. Whether the film’s numbers will soar as high as Compton‘s remains to be seen, though it’s unlikely, given that, according to Box Office Pro, the film’s social media stats currently trail those of Tate Taylor’s 2014 James Brown drama Get on Up, which posted $13.5 million over its opening weekend three years ago. That puts Cars 3 on track to gross approximately $56-$60 million through Sunday. With a $125 million budget, the film’s international performance is its saving grace, with U.S. With better-than-expected reviews, Moore’s in-demand screen presence (This Is Us is one of the most popular shows on television at the moment), and seasonal tastes (genre films tend to perform better in the summer and winter) working in its favor, all signs point to 47 Meters Down posting a decent number in the $7-$12 million range at roughly 2,300 theaters this weekend. Jekyll, and Frankenstein’s Monster — underwhelmed across its first weekend on North American screens with a middling $31 million. Releasing almost exactly one year after Blake Lively led the similarly-themed creature feature The Shallows,   this film enters theaters with a relatively untested distributor, Entertainment Studios, behind it, though the film’s robust marketing push has visibility high. in the lead role — is finally hitting 2,450 theaters this weekend, and fans are likely to make the film a hit in his honor. 2 – Wonder Woman – $35 million
After dipping an unprecedented 43 percent after its record-breaking $103 million opening weekend at the top of the month, Wonder Woman   is poised to charge onward, shedding as little ticket buyers as possible in the process. With superb word of mouth fueling the film’s already impressive grosses ($453 million worldwide and counting), expect Wonder Woman to continue its light descent down the domestic chart to the tune of $30-$35 million in the days ahead. Additionally, Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke appear in Aisling Walsh’s Maud Lewis biopic Maudie, which traveled the festival circuit to positive critical reaction late last year. As it heads into its second weekend in wide release, the film is on track to lose at least 50 percent of its debut audience, finishing the period ahead with anywhere between $12 million to $15 million. The film did manage to earn star Tom Cruise’s best worldwide opening of all time, however, raking in a healthy $172.4 million total from all global territories. 5 – The Mummy – $14 million
Universal’s first foray into its planned Dark Universe — slated to come together through films about classic horror figures like the Invisible Man, Dr. biopic   Straight Outta Compton to a staggering $60.2 million opening in 2015 will similarly turn out to support All Eyez On Me,   which is named after Shakur’s 1996 studio album of the same name. Mature audiences are the target, here, and they’ll show up enough to register the project as a specialty success. The film’s growing social media presence indicates an opening larger than Amy Schumer’s Snatched, which bowed to $19.5 million in May, but that number could balloon higher, as this year a major, adult-oriented comedy has yet to take hold of the market, meaning Rough Night   could quench the industry’s thirst for a comedy hit to the tune of $20-$25 million. His life and impact are still felt throughout the music industry, and it’s probable that the same audiences that catapulted Universal’s N.W.A. The third film’s forerunners didn’t exactly break box office records, either, finishing their respective release windows between $60 million and $66 million. Disney is putting the pedal to the metal with its   Cars franchise for a third time this weekend, as the Pixar series enters a crowded theatrical arena rife with strong holdovers and a handful of newcomers alike. 1 finish. What Cars does have on its side as it races into 4,256 theaters this Friday, however, is a lack of competition. The last major animated title to open wide in North America was Fox’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which made a so-so $23.9 million at the start of June, but other than that, families are hungry for a hit aimed squarely at them, and by all accounts (reviews aren’t awful thus far), Cars 3 delivers.

Yoko Ono to be credited alongside John Lennon as songwriter of ‘Imagine’

Since a song enters the public domain 70 years after the death of its last surviving creator, Ono would extend the length of time the song generates income for its writers by at least 37 years. Though in a wheelchair due to a flulike sickness, Ono declared, “This is the best time of my life.”Though the move to credit Ono on “Imagine” may stick in the craw of those who still cling to the idea that the artist was the reason the Beatles disbanded, Paul McCartney has long been on the record as dispelling those rumors.”She certainly didn’t break the group up, the group was breaking up,” he said in a 2012 interview with David Frost. I was still selfish enough and unaware enough to take that contribution without acknowledging it.”He continued:   “I was still full of wanting my own space after being in the room with four guys and always having to share everything.” The song, he said, “expresses what I learned through being with Yoko and my own feelings on it.”Though the process has been started,   Israelite told Variety that there are still potential roadblocks to getting Ono credited. When we went off the air in 2009, I think a lot of people thought, “Okay, the baton is passed now, and there will be lots of shows that portray lesbian life.” There’s really nothing. Fargo actress teases season finale: ‘You do not know what to expect’

Though such allusions aren’t always blatantly mentioned by Hawley, Winstead explained, “I think most of us involved are very familiar with the movies … so I think they kinda stand out on the page, even if it’s not referenced. It would beat you down. RuPaul is confident he would walk away with the crown and scepter (from Fierce Drag Jewels, no less) if he ever competed as a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race. He trailblazes by trial and error. (The question is irresponsible because entertaining that frivolity is a large reason why we’re in a situation where we need magazine covers devoted to LGBTQ awareness   in the first place.) But when your cover star is RuPaul and he’s in full glam drag behind a podium emblazoned with the insignia of the country’s highest office, you do your national duty and ask RuPaul whether he would ever take his peerless voice and amplify it in Washington. In the George W. It’s just not a fun experience. And I had to save my energy so I could be doing what I do now.”
(To the point of exhaustible energy, Ru says it certainly applies to the current administration: “What’s happening now, they’re weakening more and more every day, because it’s just not going to go anywhere. “Every time I bat my eyelashes, it’s a political act,” is the joke he often shares, and it’s true. You actually have more power to reach more people.’ And I really believe that.”
From his unique podium in pop culture, Ru has always played a role in putting the spotlight on gay rights, sometimes just by the sheer virtue of his own identity. “I would win Drag Race and I know why I would win Drag Race. I knew I had to step back. He especially doesn’t. Nowadays, it has become common practice to ask responsible celebrities the completely irresponsible question of whether they would ever consider a run for office. “Every season of Drag Race, there’s only one winner and that is RuPaul,” he laughs. I wouldn’t want to be in a public office. It just can’t.”)

It’s won for me all of these years. “I understand the drive to want to do that because you can make changes in Congress,” Ru says. He’s also stirred up controversy over the years for his use of gender pronouns and trans language. And when Ru stepped out of the spotlight in the early 2000s, he partly owed that absence to the political climate and how useful he felt he could be as a voice during that era: “There was a change in the air, politically, and a hostility I could feel. It’s not for everybody. Bush years I remember being on talk shows and trying to explain certain things and I could feel this wall going up and I knew, don’t exhaust yourself. I just feel on television I can reach more people.”
To that point, Ru cites a conversation he had with Marianne Williamson, a best-selling spiritualist author who made an unsuccessful congressional bid in California in 2014: “I had her on RuPaul Drives   and I remember saying, ‘You know, you realize you have more power in the rooms that you lecture in than you could in the bureaucracy of Washington, D.C., right? — there is one race he indisputably knows he’d win.

Fleet Foxes’ ‘Crack-Up’ is their most epic blast of folk-rock yet: EW review

So when Fleet Foxes’ archetypical, unadorned folksy harmony does occasionally appear, five minutes into the opening triplet, or towards the end of “On Another Ocean (January/June),” the payoff is that much more rewarding. “I Should See Memphis”
On this five-minute, contemplative acoustic tale of a lost traveler wandering the world, Pecknold shows that even when the orchestral veneer and heady conceptualizing is stripped away, Fleet Foxes can still write a killer straightforward folk tune. Best Tracks
“Third of May/Odaigahara”
“Aren’t we meant to be crowded together?” Pecknold sings on this abstract, cinematic epic tale of loyalty and communion that starts off as a bright, folk-pop song before descending into a dissonant, orchestral exploration. Six years after the late aughts folk-rock juggernauts released Helplessness Blues, the highly anticipated follow up to their pioneering debut, 2008’s Fleet Foxes, the Seattle-based quintet is back with their third album, Crack-Up. At eleven songs and nearly an hour long, the band’s latest work is both their most challenging and their most rewarding. Two of its standout moments, the opening triplet “I Am All That I Need/Arroyo Seco/Thumbprint Scar” and the nine-minute long “single” “Third Of May/Ōdaigahara” are deeply adventurous medleys — a collection of miniature songs within a song — that clash and cling to each other, resulting in grand, operatic statements from a band that’s historically relied on more of a quaint musical minimalism for its best work. But such adventurousness is not an entirely new approach to songwriting for lead songwriter Robin Pecknold and the rest of the band, who began toying in earnest with meandering experimentation on Helplessness. Crack-Up is, first and foremost, an intricately woven unified whole, with songs bleeding into one another and lyrical themes recurring throughout. But on their latest, the band’s melodies are crisper and sonic dynamics and tempo-shifts are employed to greater effect. Show Full Article

His only friend is another alienated boy named Flake (Sawyer Barth), whose desire for vengeance in the face of their daily humiliations taps into Edwin’s insecurities, and leads them towards catastrophe. It’s cyclical and frustrating…   While the topic of school shootings is divisive, my intention is not to make a bold statement about why these tragedies occur. It’s in the aftermath of these tragedies when we long for answers.
