Ted Koppel tells Sean Hannity he’s bad for America

I did about a 45 minute interview with CBS. “I say this with all due respect and a compliment to you and your work during the Iranian hostage crisis. Box office report: ‘Beauty and the Beast’ doubles ‘Power Rangers’ weekend gross

3 is the Legendary/Warner Bros. actioner   Kong: Skull Island, which muscles   a further $14.4 million over its third weekend in wide release. As expected, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast   roars atop the weekend box office for the second week in a row, bounding past a wide crop of newcomers as the month of March sets   a new industry standard in record time. 1 – Beauty and the Beast – $88.3 million
2 – Power Rangers – $40.5 million
3 – Kong: Skull Island – $14.4 million
4 – Life – $12.6 million
5 – Logan – $10.1 million
6 – Get Out – $8.7 million
7 – CHiPs – $7.6 million
8 – The Shack – $3.8 million
9 – The LEGO Batman Movie – $2 million
10 – The Belko Experiment – $1.8 million

The franchise flick has made $133.5 million in the U.S. Elsewhere, the comparatively low-profile basketball drama Slamma Jamma   posts a decent $1.7 million after playing at 502 sites over the weekend. Though they’re technically rivals in the box office arena, the impressive weekend hauls   of both   Power Rangers   and   Beauty and the Beast   have helped domestic totals push past the $1 billion mark for March alone, making it the month’s best showing in history, according to comScore. Coming in at No. The $58 million production meets modest industry expectations over a competitive weekend through Sunday, earning an estimated $12.6 million — a relatively low number given its star power (Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal star), intriguing alien-centric premise, and effective marketing campaign. At a distant second is Lionsgate’s Power Rangers reboot, which slightly exceeds industry forecasts with a healthy $40.5 million. Per comScore, overall box office is up around 5.5 percent from the same frame last year. The Bill Condon-directed fantasy falls around 49 percent for a sophomore finish of $88.3 million, bringing its North American total to $316.9 million in a mere 10 days. 4 is the heavily buzzed Sony/Skydance thriller Life, which world-premiered at SXSW to solid critical reviews earlier this month. Outside the top five, Warner Bros.’ kitschy contemporary adaptation of the beloved television series CHiPs   bows with an estimated $7.6 million — a lukewarm start for director-writer-star Dax Shepard’s latest filmmaking effort, which was reportedly produced on a budget of around $25 million. Falling one spot to No. So far this year, Disney has amassed an estimated $1.3 billion globally. At   310 locations, the Woody Harrelson/Laura Dern vehicle Wilson — helmed by The Skeleton Twins director Craig Johnson — also bows with a soft estimated $330,000, averaging approximately $1,065 per theater. and Canada thus far, with another $258.6 million pouring in from overseas for a global total of $392.1 million and counting. Overseas, Beauty and the Beast adds $119.2 million after opening in territories like France, Australia, and Argentina, cementing the film’s $690.3 global total to date. After breaking the March opening weekend record last week, Beauty and the Beast goes on to score the fourth   largest 10-day gross of all time this weekend in addition to posting   the fourth   largest second weekend   tally of all time. Critical Mass: ‘Power Rangers’ sputters out, ‘Life’ worth living

Life   isn’t a great movie (in fact, it’s kind of a mess). B–
Read the full review here. Mangold shoots the film in a grungy, south-of-the-border Peckinpah palette. And mostly, they succeed. For a film that’s asking hard questions, it takes the easy way out. Rotten Tomatoes: 67%

The Shack
Now playing. If it feels like   Life   succeeds in spite of itself, the important thing is that it succeeds. More than ever, Jackman’s Logan seems like he’s at an existential dead-end, and he’s never exactly been a barrel of laughs to begin with. All that’s missing in the film’s bucolic spiritual way-station is a cornfield. She’s the daughter he never slowed down enough to allow himself to have. The Power Rangers are expected to work some light magic on the weekend box office in the days ahead, but can they also capture the hearts of movie critics? EW’s Chris Nashawaty   says:
Cranston’s Zordon tells the teens that an evil fallen Power Ranger (think Darth Vader) named Rita Repulsa has been reawakened from way back in the day and is about to destroy their peaceful seaside town of Angel Grove (and the rest of planet Earth) in her search for the coveted all-powerful Zeo Crystal. Its answers are offered up too easy. But there’s also something about the film that leaves a sour aftertaste. I wish there was just a little bit more of it in this   Beauty and the Beast. Power Rangers
Now playing. In fact, the final third of the film is in such a rush to get to its unearned hopeful ending that you get the feeling there must be a far better version of it on the floor of some editing room in L.A. Somehow it manages to keep pushing enough joy-buzzer buttons to keep the audience on edge until the last scene. Since Laura’s mutant physical gifts are so identical to Logan’s, there’s a melancholy to their relationship. They’re saving this one special — and very, very violent child (although there will turn out to be others like her). Don’t worry, though, there’s more than enough corn elsewhere in the movie. It’s hard to argue with spiritual movies that are as well-intentioned as The Shack is. C–

I kept waiting for Jeff Goldblum to show up on their communication screen to say, “Life…uh…finds a way.” Espinosa stages some clever scares and creative kills while the crew make one bone-headed decision after another in their bid to survive (they have a particular knack for opening hatches when they should stay closed). Still, Peele is undeniably a born filmmaker with big ambitions and an even bigger set of balls. Then again, watching smart people make dumb choices is one of cinema’s deepest pleasures. It’s both as manipulative and hokey as that sounds, but occasionally it works well enough that you might find yourself getting choked up against your better judgment. Rotten Tomatoes: 46%
Metacritic: 44

Now playing. But the rest of the film is lazily plotted and only sporadically funny, depending on your tolerance of jokes about sexting the wrong person. Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s musical numbers are peppered throughout along with some new ones by Menken and Tim Rice. But   Get Out’s delicate balancing act gets wobbly in the second half of the film when Peele’s conceptually daring premise unspools with a fairly clichéd genre climax. EW’s Chris Nashawaty says:
Directed by Craig Johnson, who wrote and helmed the far better 2014 Bill Hader/Kristen Wiig comedy   The Skeleton Twins,   Wilson   has some deliciously awkward laughs thanks to Harrelson’s curmudgeonly, childlike performance, but it zips right along without ever landing any emotionally resonant blows. Logan   is essentially a road movie, but it’s a dark one (and a very long one). More than movies or theme parks, Disney has always been in the business of selling magic. It makes light of the grueling process of grieving for a loved one. EW’s Chris Nashawaty   says:
Once in the castle, Belle and Beast both quickly (too quickly) change: He goes from cruel captor to fellow booklover; she goes from fiery inmate to besotted Stockholm Syndrome victim in time for their love to save the day. The poor misunderstood guy seems destined to keep proving to humankind that he comes in peace. But it is a really fun one. C–

The actual action is exciting enough, and Shepard’s motorcycle chase scenes are a welcome respite of both action and comedy. I kept waiting for a single tear to streak down his big hairy cheek. A cackling sadistic crone with a sweet tooth for gold and insult comedy, Banks’ baddie gives the leaden fight scenes some adrenalin and winking humor. During her quest, she will summon a humongous gold beastie called Goldar. B-

Metacritic: 62

Now playing. It’s all gibberish, really — blockbuster Mad Libs where you could easily substitute “Zeo Crystal” with “Infinity Stone” and “Goldar” with “Apocalypse” or “Kraken” or “LEGO Joker.” The only thing that makes this battle-heavy second half orgy of green-screen destruction remotely interesting is Elizabeth Banks’ Repulsa. Larson takes surprisingly few pictures for a photographer, but she does get her Fay Wray moment. Rotten Tomatoes: 92%
Metacritic: 77

Get Out
Now playing. Or, at least, well enough. With so many new (Life, CHiPs) and holdover titles entering theaters this weekend, EW wants you to make good choices at the movies, so consult our Critical Mass reviews guide below before heading to the multiplex this weekend. Rotten Tomatoes: 71%

Kong: Skull Island
Now playing. The rest are, more or less, just bodies lining up for the body count—although some of the kills are surprisingly clever and not   worth spoiling. EW’s Chris Nashawaty says:
It’s not giving anything away to say that from this point on,   Life   is basically a zero-gravity bodycount flick —   And Then There Were None   in space. The team starts dropping bombs and wreaking havoc on the island, letting you know that the real monster is man himself. Rotten Tomatoes: 39%
Metacritic: 50

Beauty and the Beast
Now playing. There isn’t a lot of hope in the movie. EW’s Chris Nashawaty   says:
As for subtlety, there isn’t a whole lot   of that either. Hiddleston smolders and briefly wields a samurai sword. The stakes aren’t grandiose, no one’s saving the world. EW’s Chris Nashawaty   says:
The first half of the film builds with expertly cranked white-knuckle tension. The crew tries every way it can to kill the thing, but Calvin won’t die. And Chris’ (Daniel Kaluuya) periodic phone calls to his hilariously skeptical black friend at home (LilRel Howery) are like a merry-prankster Greek chorus commenting on the whole get-the-hell-out-of-the-houseness of Chris’ situation. Kong swats the military helicopters out of the sky like a giant swatting pesky flies. You can tell that she knows exactly what kind of film she’s signed up for and she’s decided to have a ball with it.

A week before the election this past fall,   Trump said, “When we win on Nov. However, hours before airing, POTUS seemed to know what the segment entailed, tweeting, “Watch @JudgeJeanine on @FoxNews tonight at 9:00 P.M.” This is the first time Trump has tweeted a tune-in for the show since he was interviewed on it this past August. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 25, 2017

“Americans elected the one man they believed could do it: a complete outsider beholden to no one but them,” Pirro continued in the segment, “and Speaker Ryan, you come in with all your swagger and experience, and you sell them a bill of goods, which ends up a complete and total failure, and you allow our president, in his first 100 days, to come out of the box like that?”
The host clarified her stance, saying, “This is not on President Trump. No one expected a businessman to completely understand the nuances, the complicated ins and outs of Washington and its legislative process. “The reason? President Donald Trump   continues to cozy   up to Fox News   while denouncing most other mainstream media   outlets, but his latest promotion raised a few eyebrows: On Saturday, Trump told his Twitter followers to watch   Jeanine Pirro’s   Justice With Judge Jeanine   that night for a segment that ended up beginning with the host demanding Speaker of the House Paul Ryan resign from his post. “Paul Ryan needs to step down as speaker of the House,” Pirro   kicked off her show. — Donald J. Watch @JudgeJeanine on @FoxNews tonight at 9:00 P.M. 8 and elect a Republican Congress, we will be able to immediately repeal and replace Obamacare.” That didn’t happen, as the GOP-dubbed American Health Care Act did not secure enough votes to pass. He failed to deliver the votes on his healthcare bill, the one trumpeted to repeal and replace Obamacare, the one that he had seven years to work on, the one he hid under lock and key in the basement of Congress, the one that had to be pulled to prevent the embarrassment of not having enough votes to pass.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network claimed they didn’t   speak with Trump on the subject (EW has reached out to Fox News for comment).

‘Westworld’: Which host achieved freewill in finale?

“In truth, they say, ‘It’s not TV, it’s HBO;’ they’re not kidding,” Nolan said. And now we have an answer! You’ve seen a lot of looking at A.I., and we were taken with starting a story where you start with them and they don’t know they are A.I. During the panel, which was moderated by EW’s Jeff Jensen, Nolan was joined by Joy, stars Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, James Marsden, Jimmi Simpson and executive producer Roberto Patino. The fact that their understanding of the world was limited really [bolstered the story].”

As for season 2, Nolan initially joked that it would be a musical. “It really came organically from the first idea, J.J. Probably. Reddit has already figured out the third episode twist; we’re changing that.” He was kidding. “I’ve been waiting for the message boards on Reddit to tell us,” Nolan joked before offering: “The way that we designed it and the way we shot it… that is really the first decision she’s ever made. “It’s annoying sometimes when people guess the twists and blog about it,” Nolan said, but also noted that “you can’t complain when people are that engaged… just stop doing it, please.” Joy added: “It’s amazing some of the   theories he would tell me they were coming up with.”

But Nolan also stressed that creating Westworld wasn’t just about making twists and turns in order to deceive the audience. But they are already full-steam ahead on writing season 2. and it’s really about what they make of us. During the season finale, Maeve (Thandie Newton) executed what seemed to be the perfect escape from Westworld only to discover that everything she had been doing was programmed. Show Full Article For me, it’s a very emotional moment in the episode because you’re seeing the first freewill.”
However, Nolan was much more cagey on whether Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) had also achieved freewill during the finale when she shot Ford (Anthony Hopkins). “Everyone is trying to rip the medium apart and see how many boundaries you can push,” Nolan said. Though they didn’t tease much about season 2, Nolan marveled at how quickly fans were able to deconstruct the dual timeline storytelling in season 1. We’re terribly excited [about] what we’re writing. Alas, not true. “It’s a 10-hour movie we’re making here. “Isn’t it more fun to just guess?” Nolan said. We’re writing right now. While Westworld co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were relatively tight-lipped about what’s ahead in season 2, they did offer one big revelation during the show’s panel at PaleyFest on Saturday. Get more scoop on what’s ahead here. [Abrams’] pitch of, ‘Well, you can make part of the narrative about the hosts,’ we took that and ran a country mile with it. As for whether they’ll venture to new worlds — like the Samurai World glimpsed in the finale — Nolan, of course, played coy: “God, that would be cool, wouldn’t it?”
Westworld is expected to return in 2018. However, when Maeve ultimately exited the train in search of her daughter — thus abandoning her escape plans — the question remained whether that was her choice or part of her programming.

‘Pretty Little Liars’: 9 things we learned from the Paleyfest panel

“Emison is a ship that I feel like a lot of the fans really are on board with,” Mitchell said during the panel, to immediate confirmation from the audience. So we had a fan to keep us cool, and we just had our iPhone playing, and we just sweat by the fire…”
8. Season 7B is an emotional — but informative — roller coaster
King calls the final 10 episodes a long “love letter to the fans,” to be packed with drama as only Rosewood can provide. “We were all crying,” Parrish told EW. During the audience Q&A, when a fan asked whether there was any possibility of an Emison spinoff, Mitchell simply asked, “Would you guys be interested in seeing that?” The crowd responded very much in the affirmative. “There’s obviously the reveal, the main reveal, which is so crazy; it’s so good. Exactly how the season starts
Before the panel, the enthusiastic audience got a sneak peek at the first minute of the 7B premiere. “Without hurdles, the prize isn’t worth anything,” Dougherty added. “Let’s start there.”

2. The whole cast found out the ending together — with mixed reactions
The stars didn’t know how it all ended until the table read of the two-hour finale. That’s what I want. As promised, it picks up just moments after August’s midseason finale, beginning with Spencer, who has recently been shot, in the back of an ambulance. “So many fans simply say, ‘Why can’t they just be happy?’ And who wants to see that? I want there to be bloody murder all over the place. Even during the panel, Benson had difficulty maintaining her composure: “Everything you’re doing right now is making me laugh,” she accused Mitchell and Blackburn, the latter of whom didn’t know what he had done that Benson might have found funny. 5. Marlene King, along with executive producer Joseph Dougherty and cast members Ashley Benson, Tyler Blackburn, Shay Mitchell, Andrea Parker, Janel Parrish, Sasha Pieterse, and Ian Harding, appeared on a panel at Paleyfest in Hollywood Saturday to talk about the end of the series. “I read it and I was like, I don’t buy this,” he admitted to EW. Kind of just how strong this group has to stay throughout these last 10 episodes.”
“Of the last 10, there is a really big reveal at the end of every episode,” Parrish told EW. There’s a Haleb sex scene playlist
When Wieselman brought up the recent developments in Hanna and Caleb’s relationship — especially a certain scene by the fireplace — the audience went wild. Ashley Benson and Shay Mitchell are terrible scene partners
“We are actually the hardest people to work with, to get through a scene,” Benson admitted of her and real-life BFF Mitchell, who recalled one shoot in particular where “the crew was getting upset” that they couldn’t be serious. “Spaleb was fun to dabble with; Haleb is where it’s at. Creator I. Like Pretty Little Liars meets Saw.”
Blackburn’s ideal revival wouldn’t amp up the gore but rather the characters’ maturity level: “Hopefully if we all came back and we were in our mid-20s, we would all maybe deal with it a little differently. “Alison sort of hasn’t dealt with her sexuality, and these [remaining] episodes are about Alison trying to figure out what her sexuality is — and Emily plays a big part of that,” King said. “You’re going to find out who killed Jessica DiLaurentis, who A.D. “So much happens in each episode,” Blackburn told EW before the panel. Later in the panel, the actress spoke about what playing the gay teen has meant to her, saying, “I’m happy   because there [needed] to be characters like Emily from the beginning. on Freeform. 1. Everyone’s got ideas for a revival
King revealed at the Television Critics Association press tour earlier this year that they aren’t ruling out the possibility of a revival, and the cast seems to be on board. “We had a whole playlist playing. Get ready for more Emison! “It’s awkward to do a sex scene in front of a whole crew of people and have no clothes on. Here’s what we learned from their conversation, moderated by Buzzfeed’s Jarett Wieselman. The rest of the Liars show up at the hospital right after she gets there — just in time to see Toby arrive there, too. “I do feel like Haleb was meant to be,” Blackburn said. We’ve been waiting so long.”
6. “It was until we had shot and wrapped… I was driving home on my last day, slightly teary-eyed, and it landed on me, who and what this whole thing was, and I kind of went, [gasps], like, in the car, in traffic.”
4. [Blackburn] picked out the songs,” she said. “All the endgames will be endgames, but nobody’s going to get there super easily,” King teased about the final 10 episodes. We have to have some struggle here. Just, like, nip it in the bud a little faster,” he suggested. “I think there are a lot of loose strings which will be tied up — but leaving enough to allow for future things,” Harding told EW of the finale, adding that he thought a revival “would be great.” And his dream scenario for the Liars’ return? is — all of the answers.”
3. Show Full Article No, everyone can’t just be happy! It’s the show that everybody wanted but couldn’t have. You have to earn your happy ending.”

9. Since production wrapped on the series in October, the stars have been sitting on as many secrets as the Liars themselves, but they are happy to tease what fans have to look forward to in season 7B. King likes the idea of “a big, expensive, fancy movie that we shoot in Paris,” and Mitchell agrees, “If [A is] chasing us around Europe, I’d be okay with that.”
While her costars dream of international travel and R-ratings, however, Parker has one simple wish: “I’d like to be alive,” she told EW. “Most of us were just, mouth agape,” Parker said. That was a really good scene.” “It was not romantic,” Benson recalled — but they did their best. “I was leaning towards [another] actress.” But “Shay just nailed it” in her final audition, and nabbed the role. Blackburn was “stoked,” and Mitchell was “blown away” — but Harding was not immediately sold. “We come back and then the show moves [to], like, Netflix, so we do it up: Suddenly there’s, like, swearing and full-blown nudity. “I’m not trying to be unprofessional by laughing on this stage, but every time I look at Tyler’s face I start laughing!”
7. But also just where the relationships end up — that’s another thing that fans are really going to love. Pretty Little Liars has only 10 episodes — and at least as many unsolved mysteries — left before fans say goodbye to Rosewood. Mitchell was King’s second choice to play Emily
Speaking of Emison, half of the ship was almost completely different. “We had a really hard time finding our Emily, and it was down to the wire,” King said.
