‘Big Little Lies’ paints a compelling but terrible world

The star-studded limited series is an adaptation of Australian author Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name and delves into   the dark side of parenting. This is like a French pastry: It’s light, flaky, rich, self-serious and ultimately there is nothing inside…This is a bunch of rich women snipping and bitching at each other.” He goes to express his dislike of a show based on a “bulls—” inciting incident. This week’s topic of conversation for Bingeworthy hosts Jessica Shaw and Touré is HBO’s upcoming   comedy-drama miniseries, Big Little Lies   — and   they really   can’t agree on whether it’s must-see TV or just plain terrible. But does its star power make it worth the watch? “To me it was perfect, it was absolute perfect television and how often do we see something like that?”
But Touré feels the opposite. “This is what happens when you have all the talent in the world, a wonderful writer in David E. “I could not get enough of this.”
Shaw continues to sing the show’s praises: “I   loved the characters; I loved the gray area that each one of them existed in; I loved the dynamics between them, the friendships, the adversaries; I loved the mysteries,” she says. ‘New Girl’: Max Greenfield explains the way Schmidt speaks

Jess still has feelings for Nick, but he’s dating Reagan now. That show is so great, and it’s so funny to watch because you see Gordon with the kids and you go, “I don’t know why he’s yelling at all the adults in the other show.”
I know, he’s so nice to the kids! Do you ever miss playing playboy Schmidt? But it really comes down to, I’m originally from New York, and when I first moved, my now-wife, who I was dating at the time, was like, “You’re never gonna work with that accent.” And so I went to a bunch of dialect coaches and really worked on that accent. It’s so hard to imagine type-A Schmidt changing a baby’s diaper. I’m just excited. That was one of my favorites, that one got me. Oh, gosh. There are certain moments where I’ll just read the word, and I’ll mispronounce it, and it’ll make me laugh the way that I said it, and I’ll be like, it’s close enough. I would hope that these characters who started off in their twenties, who are now moving into their early thirties, would get their s— together to some degree, and I think we also have to make that decision on our own to make these characters mature a little bit. And it’s a big moment — they would be the first people from the loft to move out. He’s a real mensch. Do you have a favorite? It’s like pronouncing full letters in the middle of words. Winston’s proposing to Aly, Nick published his book. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So first thing’s first — are Schmidt and Cece ever going to move out of the loft? I’ve gotten really into MasterChef Junior, oh my god, that’s a good show. New Girl airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. It’s so distinct and it’s so funny. It doesn’t seem like Schmidt would be like, sitting around going, “Not in the cards for me.” I feel like he’s got a number in his head of how many he wants, and what gender they’re going to be, and where they’re gonna go to college, and where they’re going to work. It’s not the most fun thing to do when you’re on a TV show, and you’re shooting 24 episodes a year, so you’re like, “I gotta keep this fresh somehow.” Whenever I’m gonna do it, whenever I see a word that I think to myself, “I’m going to lay into that one,” I always get excited, and I probably break in the first take. ET on Fox. I wouldn’t say that we fully have our s— together. Everyone would die of alcohol poisoning. Do you have anything else you want to add about the rest of   season? What do they do, Man Crush Mondays on the internet? Was that all you? My daughter and I watch it now together. I can only imagine they’ve gotta have kids at some point. Really? I don’t think any of the characters have changed, I just think their circumstances have gained responsibility. As New Girl heads into the home stretch of season six, the rest of our favorite loft dwellers are doing a whole lot of growing up, too, so EW caught up   with Max Greenfield, who plays Schmidt, ahead of Tuesday’s episode to talk about what’s next for his character, Cece, and the rest of the crew. He’s the best. They’ll always write a scene where I’m discussing sports with somebody, by accident usually, and they always amplify it to an unrealistic degree, and it’s always the funniest thing on set, and then I think they watch it, and they’re like, “This doesn’t make any sense, we can’t air this. I think it feels like we’re maybe starting to wind things down. It takes away a very fun aspect of playing the character. MAX GREENFIELD: It’s almost time. And I think within that, it’s nice because you’re seeing them change a little bit but they always sort of, in moments of stress, whenever there’s any sort of pressure put on them, they sort of revert back to who we originally saw. I’m not into it. Once in a while, Lamorne [Morris] will laugh, Lamorne will indulge me. We’ll sing like a fun jingle about Betsy DeVos. And he’s a good therapist, to boot. I didn’t know that. So I’m Jess. I didn’t have any scenes with him, unfortunately, but he’s the greatest human being on earth. The loft has been part of the show, and to move out of it, it’s a really huge deal. He really is. They’re both set on moving into this house. Part of what makes Schmidt so funny are his one-liners. And by the way, did you know he runs like, Iron Mans? How did you come up with the way he talks? But over six seasons, we’ve seen him evolve into the human equivalent of the heart eyes emoji: a loved-up, supportive husband to Jess’s best friend Cece, with nary a douchebag jar in sight. Oh, come on, really? It’s Jay Cut-uh-ler now — I can’t do it any other way. You’ve been playing these characters for six years now, so what has it been like to watch them go from these twentysomethings to people who actually have their s— together? Read on to hear whether Greenfield is Team Jess or Team Reagan, why guest star Gordon Ramsay is his #ManCrushMonday, and whether or not we’ll ever see a 2016 election-themed round of True American. I don’t know that we’re ready to jump around on couches and accuse people of fake news. And no one else laughs. No one laughs? All of my experiences with him have been just pure generosity and kindness. I feel like of all the characters, Schmidt has probably changed the most. Show Full Article This is not a real person.”
I can’t say Jay Cutler normally anymore. I’m not really sure but they’re moving out of their loft, and Winston getting engaged, it feels like these characters are really growing up. I think he was supposed to be a real playboy and ladies’ man, and then he fell in love and it ruined everything. It seems like the whole gang is finally growing up. So where are they headed in the rest of this season? It’s a nice feeling. Speaking of Cece, what’s next for Schmidt and Cece? I think I have to be Team Jess, if for no other reason than it’s been what feels like 70,000 more years. I like when he tries to talk about sports, just like how adverse he is to athletics in general. Are you Team Reagan or Team Jess? His lack of knowledge really makes me laugh. Do you think, with the craziness of the 2016 election, we’ll see an election-inspired game of True American? In New Girl‘s first season, Schmidt was introduced as a hilariously high-maintenance playboy with a penchant for saying particularly douchey things (this happened so often he had to put a dollar into the designated douchebag jar whenever he said something particularly offensive) and wearing equally douchey items of clothing (think driving moccasins and Irish walking capes). He’s so nice and so generous. He’s a superhero. How can I choose? Did he cook for you guys on set? Like, “Oh, he’s doing it again.”
On Tuesday’s episode, Gordon Ramsay is a guest star. You gotta be. They’re almost in! I’m telling you, I’m all in on this guy. Oh god, I hope not. He’s so nice because I think that show is so much easier for him.

Harrison Ford under investigation by FAA for airport incident

Ford’s representatives said the actor did not have a comment at this time. In March 2015, the actor sustained serious injuries after crash-landing a refurbished World War II training fighter. Although the crash site was mostly soft sand, the helicopter’s left skid snagged a log and flipped the aircraft over. The official FAA report indicates the pilot   correctly read back the clearance   but instead landed on a taxiway beside the runway. He maintains a number of helicopters, single-engine planes, and even a jet at a private hangar in Santa Monica, California. “It was the easiest aircraft to get into [that I’d still] be capable, and safe, to fly.”
The actor was previously involved in a 1999 helicopter roll-over in Santa Clarita, California, just north of Los Angeles, when his Bell 206 JetRanger failed to recover power in time during a training flight, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Pilots who violate FAA regulations can face penalties ranging from a warning letter to a license suspension or revocation. Ford and his instructor were not seriously injured, and the cause of the crash was ruled to be pilot error. The incident happened Monday at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, when the Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark   star brought his single-engine aircraft in for a landing. There was no requirement to check that piece of equipment, so no one was at fault for the crash. Show Full Article No one was hurt in the incident, but the FAA will now investigate the reason for the mistaken landing. It was a mechanical issue. Ford’s plane then flew over American Airlines flight 1546, a Boeing 737 that was stopped just outside the runway, headed for Dallas with a load of passengers. The Federal Aviation Administration does not officially release the identity of individuals involved in such incidents, but sources close to the investigation confirmed the details to EW. No fault of the maintenance or anybody else.”
He began flying again as soon as he was physically able. “What annoyed me about it all was that I’d pick somebody up off the mountain one day, and two days later they’d be on Good Morning America,” Ford told USA Today in 2008. The FAA is investigating Harrison Ford after the actor reportedly landed a single-engine aircraft on the wrong part of a Southern California airport, flying directly over an airliner that was preparing for takeoff. Ford, who has a home in Jackson, Wyoming, was part of a squad of volunteers who flew over Yellowstone National Park in 2001 searching for a Boy Scout who went missing overnight. The   Aviat Husky involved in the incident was directed by air traffic control to land on Runway 20L. Ford, 74, has a long history as a pilot and has logged more than 5,200 hours in the air. A National Transportation Safety Board investigation determined the plane lost power because of a worn-out, malfunctioning carburetor part, which stalled the engine and sent him on a dive into a Santa Monica golf course shortly after takeoff. Asked about the crash on Inside the Actor’s Studio, Ford replied: “I broke it.”
Other times, his aeronautic skills have been credited with saving the day. “I got back in the helicopter first, because my foot was still in the cast, my toes were hanging out,” he said. NBC News was the first to report the story. In an interview in October 2015, Ford told EW: “I’ve been flying for 20 years, and it was a very rare thing to happen. “I thought, ‘It doesn’t give credit to all the other people involved.’ Suddenly, I’m swanning around as some kind of f—ing hero.”
For more film news, follow @Breznican. Ford was the one who located the boy while hovering over his part of the grid in the Wyoming wilderness, which made national headlines — although that part aggravated the actor.

Brace yourself: Mariah Carey to sing live on TV again

Mariah Carey (Kirk McKoy / Los Angeles Times) Not even the greatest of technical difficulties can keep Mariah Carey from returning to a television stage. Or Mariah can be Mariah and all will be well l in the world. All eyes will no doubt   be on Carey when she returns to television Wednesday. Carey’s painful six-minute set to ring in 2017 featured the songstress alternately   lip-syncing to some of her greatest hits and standing amid her background dancers telling the audience that her earpiece was not functioning. The immediate aftermath of Carey’s appearance was a flurry of finger-pointing. To that end, Carey’s backup dancers seemed to have no trouble hearing the music. The Carey camp blamed Dick Clark Productions, with a spokesperson saying, “Unfortunately there was nothing she could do to continue with the performance given the circumstances.” For its part, Dick Clark Productions claims that it   had no part in any technical difficulties and that even if Carey’s earpiece wasn’t working, there were eight monitors playing her song right next to the stage. The pop diva tweeted Tuesday that she will be stopping by “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Wednesday night to sing her new single, “I Don’t.” The appearance will be Carey’s first television performance since New Year’s Eve, when her stint on   ” Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest ” went so very wrong. At Sunday’s Grammys, the British singer stopped and restarted her wobbly performance of George Michael’s “Fastlove,” learning from her own experience the previous year. Latest updates And if the unthinkable should happen and the technical support isn’t quite what Carey is expecting, she might want to take a cue from Adele.

‘Arrow’ tackles gun debate in heated episode

“We’ve hopefully earned the freedom to — in 23 episodes of television, you can have 22 pieces of candy and one episode of vegetables. But as tensions run high in the Arrow bunker over how best to deal with the situation, Oliver discovers that suiting up as the Emerald Archer may not be the smartest approach. “At some point, we did get away from that, as a country, and we would like the idea of hearing both sides, and hearing both sides as fairly as possible.”
“I think maybe the only thing we can agree on as Americans is that the country is as fractured now as its ever been since the Civil War,” Guggenheim adds, noting there’s a segment of the population that considers talking about politics to be impolitic. “I grew up on St. So gun violence really felt like the right thing to tackle.”
“It’s the fifth season,” Guggenheim continues. I would tease it as the best tasting broccoli you’ll ever have.”
The hour delves into the backstory of Wild Dog (Rick Gonzalez), the only member of Team Arrow who actively uses a gun when he goes into the field. During Wednesday’s episode of The CW super series, aptly titled “Spectre of the Gun,” Arrow will dive head-first into the issue of gun violence after a traumatic attack on City Hall divides Team Arrow on the Second Amendment. were “unbelievably supportive of this episode from the beginning,” Guggenheim notes. This was very much the episode we intended to do.”
Arrow airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. “He is a character whose whole superheroics revolve around guns,” Guggenheim notes. Elsewhere, Picket Fences, and L.A. Instead, this is one issue that Mayor Queen must handle. “It’s important to at least talk about this,” Mericle says. “From a story perspective, it was really the challenge of figuring out what would an episode look like where we had to solve the issue of the day, or the problem of the week, with Oliver Queen as mayor as opposed to him gearing up as the Green Arrow.”
The issue of gun safety became a hot topic during the election, with Guggenheim writing half the script in the week before Donald Trump was elected president and the other half after. Thus, Rene is a proponent of the Second Amendment, which won’t necessarily go over well with the rest of Team Arrow. “Gun violence felt like the right topic because of its topicality, but also because of the level of gun violence that is on Arrow,” Guggenheim says. “We went into season 5 wanting to do an episode about an issue,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim says, noting that the hour was born out of his throwback nature. “My point of view and suggestion as a writer is it happened because we all stopped talking to each other.”
Though the show is tackling a polarizing subject, both The CW and Warner Bros. “At the beginning of the season, we told them we wanted to do a gun violence episode, they were like, ‘Great.’ … We got the usual [Standards and Practices] notes in terms of the amount of gun violence, but nothing was compromised. We do explore the issue of gun violence. Law. “As you watch the episode — I write chronologically and linearly — and I think you can see that, in the second half, it’s about guns and gun violence, but it’s also about the state of discourse in our country,” Guggenheim says. Arrow is going where it has never gone before. Therefore, beyond the particular right to bear arms, the producers wanted to delve into the actual debate surrounding gun control. … I would never want people to watch under false pretenses, so I would probably be very upfront about the fact that it’s not a typical Arrow episode. “We could have done an episode on abortion, but that’s not really where the show lives. “There was an opportunity also to do an episode where he wasn’t going to get in the Green Arrow costume,” executive producer Wendy Mericle says. I grew up in a time where it was commonplace — like literally every week — for a one-hour drama to tackle the issues of the day. ET on The CW. Somewhere along the line, we got away from that — the whole industry got away from that. Now you have Black-ish and Carmichael Show, but as far as network dramas are concerned, [they’re] really not tackling current events, current issues.”
With that in mind, finding the right topic for CW’s flagship superhero series was easy. Show Full Article

Tony Goldwyn has a killer idea in ‘The Belko Experiment’ clip

After a season premiere filled with anguish and plenty of tears, the   midseason return of The Walking Dead has the hosts of Bingeworthy at odds over its sustainability as a series. Everyone was so tortured and sad,” said Jessica Shaw on the infamous Negan scenes from season 7’s premiere episode, which killed off two mainstay characters. “They definitely like to plant the seeds,” said Shaw in defense, addressing the series’ tendency to deliver more character moments over all-out action. The Bingeworthy host isn’t alone in wanting the dour tone gone, as Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl on the AMC series, told EW, “This show always feels like the show to me when that group is working in unison, and that first half was very hard for us to film.”
Fellow host Touré doesn’t have the same approach to the hopeful tone set in the return episode. “I have to say, I’m ready for it. As for fans looking for more intrigue, Touré believes the latest villain is the key.

‘Stranger Things 2’: Paul Reiser shares how his top-secret role is connected to ‘Aliens’

What am I — an animal?” Literally, I heard about it five minutes earlier. Yes. That tickled me. My lines were to the effect of, “Trust me. I don’t know.”

Show Full Article I did a scene a few weeks ago with David Harbour, and it was a heated scene where he’s sort of holding me accountable. It was sort of nebulous — is he a good guy or a bad guy? It’s a huge production. It’s been nothing but fun and I just get to come in and out of there. They said your son was a huge fan. You never know when something will hit the nerve. When I met them last summer, they were still pinching themselves that not only were they hip, but that they even got to do it. No. PAUL REISER: They did. They’ll kill me.” Then I said, “Here, sit it in the corner quietly and do not take a picture of this and don’t tell anybody.” I just showed him a script at home and I said, “Now I’m gonna hit you in the head ’til you forget it.”
Does it feel cool to be part of something that’s such a cultural hit? It’s been great fun. We’ve all done things that we’re very proud of that don’t quite pop. Owens comes to Hawkins and you’re in charge of the lab and a cleanup of the previous incident? “We want people to have those debates like, ‘Do you trust that guy or is he Burke?’” Ross says. The Duffers said he’s different from Matthew Modine’s Dr. It’s very cool. Stranger Things 2 features the return of all the fan favorite characters and the arrival of some new faces to Hawkins, Indiana, namely Dr. What’s this been like so far? To be honest, I’ve only read a few of the scripts so I still don’t know and I’m not sure they know. It’s funny — a lot of people ask me what happens and I can honestly say, “They haven’t told me. The production value is fantastic and the guys are great. My guy is much more hands-on and sort of among his many degrees is that he has a bedside manner that Modine’s character did not have. Yeah, it dropped on a Friday and that weekend my son, who was 15 at the time, said, “Have you heard of this new show?” I said, “No.” And he said, “It’s great.” I said, “When did it come out?” He said, “Yesterday!” So that’s how much he has his finger on the pulse. It’s unbelievable what they’ve done. Owens, played by Paul Reiser (Red Oaks). In their initial season 2 pitch to Netflix, creators Ross and Matt Duffer actually referred to the character as “Paul Reiser.” Speaking to EW, Ross admits the character is an homage to Reiser’s traitorous Aliens character, Burke. My son, who got me the job, basically said, “Well, what happens?” And I said, “I can’t tell you. Has that been a challenge? He told me and I sat down at my desk and I got a call from my agent and he said, “Have you heard of this show Stranger Things?” And I said, “Of course I have! “Paul was saying the reason James Cameron cast him is because he thought people would inherently trust him and it would be a twist.”
EW talked to Reiser about Things, Aliens, and how his teenage son got him the job. So when they laid it out, I said, “Tell me where to show up and I’ll be there!”
Rob Kim/Getty Images
Did they lay out the whole second season? Owen “Paul Reiser.” Did they tell you that? I know coming into this what this community has gone through and my job is to try and walk them through their mistrust. I have the luxury to come and play in a sandbox that’s been set up and built and to have that anticipation. I met the Duffers and they were delightful. I think part of what they were tickled by was, to whatever extent people know me from Aliens, they’re automatically going, “Oh this guy is no good.” I don’t know where they’re going with it but it’s a fun thing to play. These guys just seem like what they are — they’re young film enthusiasts who love those stories and love that style. Everything is fine.” I said, “I don’t believe me and I am me!” It just feels like there’s such a well-worn precedent not just of Aliens but in life when a government guy says, “No, you’re fine. Modine’s character had very few lines so he was this looming, powerful presence. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: The Duffers told me that even before you signed on they called Dr. He’s my cultural touchstone. There’s nothing to worry about here.” It’s like, “Yeah, I don’t believe you.”
So Dr. I have a certain thing in my head that I’m playing. Nothing has made me happier. The secrecy this season is way higher. And I think this is toying with both expectations. It’s like making a movie every week. There’s a little more humanity. Brenner.

Listen to an audio excerpt of Stephanie Garber’s bestselling novel, ‘Caraval’

Stephanie Garber’s   Caraval has been casting its spell on readers since it’s release and now readers can hear the tale in its new audioboook. The debut novel—and one of EW’s most anticipated YA books of the year—follows Scarlett as she partakes in the titular Caraval, a magical five-night game where nothing is as it seems, and everything is to be questioned, in an effort to save her younger sister Tella from their cruel father. Below, you can listen to an excerpt from Chapter 15 in the audiobook, which sees Scarlett visit Nigel, a fortune teller of sorts, in her quest to get a clue about her sister’s whereabouts. But there’s just one catch—as is the case with Caraval—she can only ask   three questions of the tattooed-seer. However, when her sister becomes the prize everyone is competing for, Scarlett decides to join forces with Julian, the mysterious sailor who helped them get to the “Isla de la Sueños,” where the game is played. Marie Avgeropoulos explains how Octavia has evolved on ‘The 100’

After all, she had a sibling and was excited by the fact that she was stranded on the ground. “[They] realized, ‘Wow, we can use her athletic ability,’ and [they were able to] mold this really dynamic character that’s been such a pleasure to play.”
She also credits Octavia’s fighting spirit and abilities to Indra (played by Adina Porter), whose role as her mentor continues to grow. “This is my favorite season for Octavia,” actress Marie Avgeropoulos tells EW of her ever-growing character. “Octavia proves to the audience that she does whatever is necessary to carry out the task, but the audience will see if that’s true if it directly affects her mentor.”
Without revealing too much, she says Octavia also becomes allies with someone new this episode, although “neither of the two quite trust each other.”
With all these shifting alliances and relationships at Polis, it’s easy to forget that the world is still ending in six months. “Indra has become almost closer to Octavia than Bellamy because she taught her to be the woman she really is — especially after Lincoln’s death,” Avgeropoulos says. Season 4 has already revealed that she’s evolved yet again… into an   assassin. “She kept her really focused and encouraged her.”
But that relationship could be in jeopardy in Wednesday’s episode, “The Four Horseman.”
“The third episode puts Octavia in an interesting predicament because it introduces a dynamic that’s paramount to both Octavia and Indra,” Avgeropoulos teases. But Avgeropoulos says Octavia isn’t too worried: “I think she will find a way around that for sure.”
The 100 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. But her evolution to warrior still came as a surprise for most fans. “You can really see how far she’s come from chasing butterflies to chasing blood.”
The 30-year-old actress credits this expanded role to the creators and writers getting to know her better. Octavia Blake has always been different from the other teens who fell from the sky on The 100. ET on The CW. Show Full Article
